| Tom Hanks hasn’t directed a film since 1996 with That Thing You Do, but judging by the fact that I watch that movie at least twice a year, I think it’s time he got back in the director’s chair. Apparently, I’m not alone in this mentality; Universal has acquired the domestic rights to Larry Crowne, which Hanks wrote and will direct and star in alongside Julia Roberts.
Larry Crowne centers on “a middle-aged man who’s forced to find a new career,” which could literally mean anything. We’ll have to wait a while until the details are hashed out. The film will begin production in April in Los Angeles.
Here’s a warning sign though: Hanks script is a modified version of Talk of the Town, a script originally fleshed out by My Big Fat Greek Wedding’s Nia Vardalos. I don’t know about you, but the writing and comedy in that film has aged so poorly that it’s hard to revisit the thing. Hopefully, Hanks’ modifications are for the better.
